When I learned chili cheese pizza was a thing, I had a hard time finding a suitable vegan-friendly recipe, so I knew I had to make my own!

Honestly though, I wasn’t sure if this recipe was going to work out at first. I mean, chili cheese fry pizza sounds awesome, but it also sounds like a lot. Is it just one of those things that sounds good but doesn’t live up to the hype once you actually taste it?

The answer is a resounding no! T and I took one bite of this vegan chili cheese fry pizza and were so wowed by how delicious this was! We even caught that moment on camera. Check out this video and watch until the end to see it!

It’s everything you love about the flavor profile of chili cheese fries but on a pizza – layers of leftover homemade chili, crispy french fries, and non-dairy cheddar cheese in each bite. And the best part? It’s all the flavor and a lot less mess.

Ingredients in Veggie Chili Pizza

Here’s what you’ll need to make this vegan chili cheese pizza recipe!

Pizza dough – We used our homemade pizza dough recipe for the pizza crust here. It has just the right amount of fluffiness while still being hearty enough to hold all the delicious toppings. Feel free to use a premade pizza dough, but I would recommend a frozen dough rather than refrigerated.

Frozen french fries – For a fun twist, we add French fries to the classic chili cheese pizza! We like the straight cut frozen french fries for this recipe. You could also use any leftover fries you’d like!

Vegan chili – This will take the place of traditional pizza sauce or tomato sauce. We used our homemade TVP chili with kidney beans, green pepper, and a homemade chili seasoning mix for this recipe, and it worked like a charm! You can use your favorite chili recipe, leftover chili, or even canned chili.

Vegan cheddar shreds – We used a combination of Daiya and Vevan. Both melt beautifully for this pizza recipe! I would stay away from Violife for this recipe unless you’re using a pizza oven (like the Pizzadesso!) that reaches a really high heat (600-800F). I prefer cheddar shreds for this recipe, but feel free to do a combination of vegan cheddar and mozzarella cheese if that’s your jam!

Chopped green onions – for garnish

Optional toppings – Have fun with this! Feel free to top pizza with sliced jalapenos for a little kick, Fritos, Italian seasoning, black olives, extra chili powder, and/or vegan sour cream!

How to Make Vegan Chili Cheese Pizza

It may sound complicated, but this chili french fry pizza is actually a super easy meal to make…especially if you’re using leftover chili!

Step 1: Make the fries

Cook the fries in the air fryer or oven according to the package directions. If you haven’t already, make the chili now too and let it cool in the refrigerator.

We almost always have some of our vegan chili in a freezer bag, so we just pull that and let it defrost in the fridge overnight!

Step 2: Assemble the pizza

Preheat oven to 475F and stretch your pizza dough on a lightly floured surface to fit your pizza pan, cast iron pan, or pizza stone. We prefer to stretch the dough rather than press dough into the pan for best texture results.

Spread 1.5 cups of the chili evenly over the crust, leaving a 1-inch border around the edge. Then, add 3/4 cups of the vegan cheese. and top that with the fries. Spread the cooked fries evenly over the crust vegan cheese and top with remaining chili and then cheese.

Step 3: Cook the pizza

Bake your pizza in the 475 degree oven for 15-20 minutes, stopping to rotate the pan once halfway through. It’s ready when the crust is golden brown and the vegan cheese has melted.

Step 4: Finishing touches

Remove and let cool on your cutting board or wire rack for 10 minutes before slicing. Before serving, top with sliced green onions, Fritos, or a dollop of sour cream (Our favorite dairy-free sour cream is from Tofutti!).

How to Make in the Pizzadesso

We recently received a Pizzadesso indoor pizza oven from our friends at Salton, and it totally takes this pizza to the next level!

Here are the instructions for making this pizza in the Pizzadesso:

  1. Follow the instructions for making each component of the pizza as written.
  2. Turn on your Pizzadesso and hit the Wood Fire setting. Then, push in the knob to start preheating.
  3. Sprinkle a hefty amount of cornmeal on your pizza peel + stretch your pizza dough to fit.
  4. Spread 1.5 cups of the chili evenly over the crust, leaving a 1-inch border around the edge. Then, add 3/4 cups of the vegan cheddar. Spread the cooked fries evenly over the vegan cheese and top with 1/2 cup chili and 3/4 cup vegan cheddar.
  5. When the Pizzadesso has preheated, it will beep a couple times & the digital read will switch to “Fill In”. Use the rack handle accessory to safely pull out the rack & transfer the pizza from the peel to the heated stone. Reinsert the rack using the handle, close the door, & the preset countdown will begin.
  6. 3 min later, the Pizzadesso will have worked its magic. Let cool 5 min before slicing & enjoy!

Tips and Tricks

  • If you’re not using leftover chili, you can totally make the chili ahead of time. You could cook the french fries ahead of time too, but I would avoid that if possible to get the crispiest results.
  • Use a nice sturdy pizza dough for the crust. There are a lot of toppings on this chili pizza recipe, so you’ll want a good foundation. We used our homemade pizza dough which fits that bill. If you’re using pre-made pizza dough, I would choose one that is sold frozen.
  • Always check the ingredients on your pizza dough before purchasing. A lot of store-bought pizza dough is vegan-friendly, but every now and then you’ll run into one that uses eggs or dairy.
  • If you love this whole chili cheese thing, you should try our Vegan Chili Cheese Dog recipe that uses our magical vegan carrot hot dogs.
